January Uprising (1863–64)
On the Russian Revolution map as “The January Rising”
Jan 1863–1864 — A conscription drive aimed at young patriots helps set off a Polish rising for independence. From Warsaw, the guerrilla war spreads into Lithuania and Belorussia; one of its largest early battles is lost here at Siemiatycze in February 1863. Hundreds of executions and mass deportations follow. The Tsar who reformed Russia now enforces its rule over the rising.
