Siege of Sevastopol (1855)
On the Russian Revolution map as “Sevastopol: the Malakhov falls”
8 Sep 1855 — French troops storm the Malakhov redoubt after an eleven-month siege. With this earthwork fort commanding Sevastopol in French hands, the Russian army abandons the city's south side. The defeat convinces the new Tsar that serf Russia cannot keep up: foreign armies supplied across thousands of kilometres of sea have beaten it on its own soil.
