Terms
Maps of History has four plans: Free, Starter, User and Pro. Starter, User and Pro are paid monthly, and each opens every online atlas and the interactive map while it is active.
Plans and prices
- Free (£0): 10 messages in total, limited map interactions and chat history for 7 days. Atlas access is limited: the WW2 atlas in full and chapter 1 of every other atlas, and a free account opens 3 more chapters a day.
- Starter (£7, US $9 or €8 a month): 500 messages a month, better map tools, better map rendering, every atlas and chat history for 30 days.
- User (£19, US $25 or €22 a month): everything in Starter, with 3,000 messages a month, our strongest AI model for the best-quality answers and unlimited chat history.
- Pro (£69, US $89 or €79 a month): everything in User, with unlimited messages, priority access to new features and priority handling of error reports.

You pay in pounds, US dollars or euros, depending on where you are. Stripe shows the final amount and any applicable tax before you pay. There is no free trial: a paid plan starts with its first monthly payment.
Messages
A message is one question and its answer in the map chat or the chapter chat, including any map change. The 10 free messages are counted in total; starting another conversation does not reset them. Paid plans count the messages of the last 30 days. Unlimited messages are subject to fair use, to protect the service from automated abuse. Ask, for questions about selected chapter text, has its own limits.
Renewal and cancellation
A paid plan renews each month until you cancel it. You can cancel at any time in your account, under Cancellation settings. There is no cancellation fee. Your plan continues until the end of the month you have already paid for, and no further payments are taken.
Refunds and consumer rights
Payments are non-refundable, except where the law gives you a right to cancel. All plans remain subject to applicable consumer rights, including any statutory cancellation or refund right and remedies for faulty or misdescribed digital content. Nothing in these terms removes those rights. Where consent is required to start digital access during a statutory cancellation period and to end that cancellation right, we must obtain that consent; these terms alone do not waive it. Existing customers and school use
Existing purchases and subscriptions keep the access rights and billing terms agreed at purchase. New offers do not shorten existing lifetime, annual, school or other paid access. For access across a school, department or organisation, contact hello@mapsofhistory.com. Personal plans cover the purchaser's own use; redistribution and school-wide licensing require agreement.
Map chat and chat history
Your chat history lists the conversations of the last 7 days on Free and of the last 30 days on Starter; User and Pro keep every conversation in the list. We record questions, full answers, map requests and their results for conversation history, support and product improvement, as described in our privacy policy. AI responses and custom classifications can contain errors.
Content and sources
The maps and lessons support historical study. Their sources, dates and scope appear alongside them. Geographic source licences remain applicable to the underlying geometry. Maps of History is independent and is not affiliated with or endorsed by the International Baccalaureate.
Changes
Material changes to these terms will be announced here. Changes that require agreement will be communicated before they apply. Current subscriptions retain their agreed billing terms.
