Circassian expulsion (1864)

On the Russian Revolution map as “The Circassian expulsion”

21 May 1864 — The Russian army marks the end of the Caucasian War at Kbaada (Krasnaya Polyana). Russian officials counted about half a million Circassians, a Muslim people of the western Caucasus, driven to the coast and shipped to the Ottoman Empire; later estimates put the number at a million or more. Hunger and disease kill many along the way. Circassians remember the expulsion as a national catastrophe.
