Emancipation Manifesto (1861)
On the Russian Revolution map as “The Emancipation Manifesto”
19 Feb/3 Mar 1861 — Alexander II signs a manifesto freeing some 22 million privately owned serfs, then reads it aloud himself in this riding hall on 5/17 March. Freedom brings an obligation as well: peasants must buy back their land over 49 years. Many cannot believe that this is the freedom they were promised.
