Russification of the Baltic provinces (1887–93)
On the Russian Revolution map as “Dorpat becomes Yuriev”
1887–93 — The Baltic German university town receives the name Yuriev in 1893. During the 1890s Russian replaces German as the language of its lectures, just as it has already done in Baltic schools, courts and offices. Russification alienates the loyal Baltic German elite. In time it also alienates Estonians and Latvians, many of whom had initially welcomed a check on their German landlords.
