Xinyang Incident (1959–60)
On the Mao’s China map as “Xinyang”
1959–60 — The harvest failed in Xinyang prefecture, Henan, yet officials continued to seize grain. They beat people accused of hiding food and stopped those who tried to flee. Estimates put the dead at about one million or more, out of a population of some eight million. A Party investigation in 1960 named it the “Xinyang incident”.
