Mao’s China · TURNING POINT ·
Chinese grain exports during the famine (1959–60)
On the Mao’s China map as “Grain for export”
1959–60 — Grain continued to leave China as famine spread. Much went to the Soviet Union to pay for machinery and repay loans. Exports reached about 4.2 million tonnes in 1959, their highest level in the Mao years, and fell only in 1960–61. From 1961 China began buying grain from Canada and Australia.
