Second Taiwan Strait Crisis (1958)
On the Mao’s China map as “Kinmen, 1958”
23 Aug 1958 — PLA batteries opened a bombardment of Kinmen, firing tens of thousands of shells. The attack tested Washington and rallied the Leap at home. US warships escorted Nationalist supply convoys to the edge of Chinese waters. In October Beijing settled on shelling only on odd-numbered days, a ritual that continued until 1979.
