Great Famine in Tongwei County (1959–60)
On the Mao’s China map as “Tongwei”
1959–60 — In Tongwei county, Gansu, villages were left without seed or food by procurement under provincial leader Zhang Zhongliang. Death and flight took a large share of the county’s population. In 1960, Gansu’s official death rate reached 41.3 per thousand, and investigators sent from Beijing found whole villages emptied.
