Crackdown on trade in Cholon (1978)

On the Refugee crises map as “Cholon, March 1978”

Late Mar 1978 — As the state abolishes private trade, security forces raid shops in Cholon, Saigon’s Chinese district. Many Hoa, Vietnam’s ethnic Chinese, lose their livelihoods, while worsening relations between Vietnam and China add to their insecurity. Socialist transformation becomes a reason to leave, and within a year the Hoa make up most of the people on the boats.
