White Sea–Baltic Canal (1931–33)

On the Stalin’s Soviet Union map as “The White Sea Canal”

1931–1933 — Prisoners dug the 227-km White Sea–Baltic Canal in twenty months, doing much of the work by hand. Official records count about 12,000 deaths, while other estimates put the number at 25,000 or more. Although the finished canal was too shallow for most ships, it became the Gulag’s model project.
