Kurapaty mass graves (1937–41)

On the Stalin’s Soviet Union map as “Kurapaty”

1937–1941 — The woods outside Minsk hold mass graves of people shot by the NKVD. Archaeologist Zianon Pazniak made the graves public in June 1988. An official inquiry in 1988–89 found at least 30,000 victims; later estimates range from a few thousand to over 100,000. The discovery helped launch Belarus’s national movement.
