Sack of Nishapur (1221)

On the Mongol Empire map as “Nishapur”

Apr 1221 — An arrow from Nishapur’s walls kills Genghis’s son-in-law. His widow oversees the sack, in which, the chronicles claim, even cats and dogs are killed. Merv, Nishapur, Herat and Balkh, the cities of Khorasan, become a deliberate message of war. Each was a city whose lives cannot be captured by a number.
