Feb 1220 — Genghis crosses the Kyzylkum desert by a route considered “impossible” and arrives before Bukhara from an unexpected direction. In the great mosque, he tells the notables: “I am the punishment of God. If you had not committed great sins, God would not have sent a punishment like me upon you.”
