On the Indian independence map as “The Central Provinces — the famines of 1896–1900”
1896–97 & 1899–1900 — Two failed monsoons brought famine across the Central Provinces, Bundelkhand, Gujarat, Rajputana and the Deccan; plague also arrived in Bombay in 1896. Millions died. Estimates for 1896–1902 range from about 6.1 to 8.4 million. The new Famine Codes saved many people, yet the reasons so many still died remain a matter of argument. Remember them.
