1875–77 — Sayyid Ahmad Khan founded the Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College so that India’s Muslim gentry could receive an English education within an Islamic frame. In 1887–88, he urged Muslims to stay outside the new Congress. He warned that representative government would place them under the rule of the Hindu majority.
