On the WWI map as “Kronstadt”
Jul 1891 — A French squadron calls at Russia’s naval base, where Tsar Alexander III stands bareheaded as a band plays the Marseillaise, the anthem of revolution. The scene brings unlikely partners together: autocratic Russia and republican France are courting, thirteen months after Germany allowed the Reinsurance Treaty to lapse.
