Evacuation of East Prussia (1945)

On the Refugee crises map as “Flight across the lagoon”

Jan–Apr 1945 — The Soviet advance cuts off East Prussian civilians, who cross the frozen Vistula Lagoon on foot and by cart to reach Pillau. From there, the German navy carries them west by sea. Aircraft strafed columns on the ice, and many people broke through it. The German exodus had begun as wartime flight, months before an expulsion order.
