Liberation of Bergen-Belsen (1945)

On the Refugee crises map as “Bergen-Belsen”

15 Apr 1945 — British troops reach Bergen-Belsen and find about 60,000 starving prisoners among thousands of unburied dead. Liberation came too late to save another 13,000 to 14,000 people, who died in the following weeks. Nearby, the British opened Hohne, which became Germany’s largest Jewish displaced persons’ camp. Remember them.
