Uganda · Haiti and Kenya independence

The railway was built to reach Uganda, declared a British protectorate in 1894. Britain governed largely through the kingdom of Buganda and its chiefs, and Uganda did not become a settler colony like neighboring Kenya. Its eastern province was transferred to Kenya in 1902. Uganda became independent under Milton Obote on 9 October 1962; the Kabaka of Buganda became its president in 1963.

Uganda · Decolonization of Africa

Uganda became independent from Britain in 1962 with a colonial border that enclosed a patchwork of kingdoms and peoples. Its subsequent descent led from Obote to Idi Amin’s murderous dictatorship of 1971–79, ended only by a Tanzanian invasion. Uganda became an emblem of the coup era at its worst, and of the strongman rule associated with the problem of the artificial state.
