Norway · Norse and Aztecs
Norway was the homeland of the western Norse, although only about 3 percent of its soil can be ploughed. Its chieftains supplied the ships and crews for voyages west and later built the kingdom that ruled the islands there. After 1100, stockfish dried at Lofoten and shipped through Bergen brought growing wealth; in 1261–64 Norwegian kings brought Iceland and Greenland under their crown.

Neutral Norway’s contribution to the crisis was humanitarian, and it centered on Fridtjof Nansen. The polar explorer became the League of Nations’ High Commissioner, repatriating half a million prisoners of war and organizing famine relief in 1921–22. He also invented the “Nansen passport,” which gave legal identity to hundreds of thousands of stateless White émigrés. His 1922 Nobel Peace Prize was, in effect, awarded for cleaning up after this atlas.

Norway’s ports and the iron-ore route drew a German invasion in April 1940. The name of its puppet ruler, Vidkun Quisling, became a word for a traitor. Norway’s merchant fleet, the world’s fourth largest, escaped and went on to serve the Allies decisively.
