Côte d’Ivoire · Decolonization of Africa
Félix Houphouët-Boigny led Côte d’Ivoire to independence from France in 1960. A loi-cadre alumnus, he had governed as a French minister before governing his own country. His government built what was the closest and most prosperous relationship with Paris of any former colony, at the heart of “Françafrique.” Cocoa-and-coffee wealth and French protection accompanied political independence, but the partnership also sustained dependence.
