Guinea (Fr.) · Decolonization of Africa

French Guinea alone voted “Non” to de Gaulle’s Community in 1958. France responded by stripping the country of everything it could carry, and Sékou Touré had to face the cost of the decision. “We prefer poverty in freedom to riches in slavery.” Guinea survived in defiance, helping to push the rest of French Africa toward full independence within two years. But its own government hardened into one of the era’s harsher one-party states. The story contains both the courage of the choice and its costs.
