Korean righteous armies (1907–10)

On the Meiji Japan and post-Soviet Russia map as “The righteous armies”

1907–1910 — Japan disbanded the Korean army, after which soldiers, peasants and scholars took up arms as “righteous armies”. Japanese records count more than 17,000 Korean fighters killed by 1911, many during the 1909 sweep through Jeolla province. Their resistance became a foundation of Korean national memory.
