Japanese invasion of Taiwan (1895)
On the Meiji Japan and post-Soviet Russia map as “The conquest of Taiwan”
May–Oct 1895 — Taiwanese defenders proclaimed a Republic of Formosa and resisted the Japanese landing for five months. The republic was short-lived, but armed resistance continued in the hills for years. Japan’s own count put the number of Taiwanese fighters and civilians killed at about 14,000.
