Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works (1929–32)
On the Stalin’s Soviet Union map as “Magnitogorsk”
1929–1932 — At the Magnetic Mountain in the southern Urals, a steel city rose from bare steppe. Magnitogorsk was modeled on the US Steel works at Gary, Indiana. Volunteers, peasants and deported kulaks built its first blast furnace while living in tents, barracks and dugouts; the furnace was lit in early 1932.
