Mongol invasions of Japan (1274–81)

On the Mongol Empire map as “Hakata Bay”

1274 & 1281 — Two invasions fail at Hakata Bay. Samurai maul the first, and a storm scatters it. The second brings 140,000 men, the largest seaborne force in history before 1944, but a new stone wall holds it offshore for weeks. Then a typhoon destroys the fleet. The Japanese call it kamikaze, the divine wind.
