Mao’s China · TURNING POINT ·
Five-Anti Campaign (1952)
On the Mao’s China map as “The Five-Anti campaign”
Jan–Jun 1952 — Shanghai’s private firms face investigation for five “poisons”: bribery, tax evasion, theft of state property, cheating on contracts and stealing state economic secrets. Nearly every firm is found guilty to some degree and fined. Owners are humiliated at mass meetings, and hundreds take their own lives. Private capitalism survives only in name.
