Red August (1966)
Aug–Sep 1966 — In Beijing’s “Red August”, Red Guards beat teachers and “class enemies” to death. A count published in 1980 put the dead at 1,772; a later internal figure was far higher. Beginning on 27 August, local militia in suburban Daxing county killed 325 people from landlord families in a few days. Police had been told not to intervene.
