Third Front at Panzhihua (1965)
On the Mao’s China map as “Panzhihua”
1965 — A steel city rose from nothing in the gorges of southwestern Sichuan under the Third Front. The site was chosen for its iron ore and its distance from any coast or border an enemy could reach. Workers and whole factories moved inland to build it. The Chengdu–Kunming railway serving the city opened in 1970.
