Daqing oilfield (1959–64)
On the Mao’s China map as “Daqing”
1959–64 — The great oilfield discovered on the Heilongjiang plain in 1959 was developed in the early 1960s by workers living in earth dugouts. One of them, the model worker “Iron Man” Wang Jinxi, became a national hero. Daqing ended China’s need for Soviet oil and became Dazhai’s industrial twin: “In industry, learn from Daqing.”
