Mao’s China · TURNING POINT ·
Liu Shaoqi’s Hunan inspection (1961)
On the Mao’s China map as “Liu Shaoqi goes home”
Apr–May 1961 — Liu Shaoqi spent 44 days in rural Hunan, including his home village of Tanzichong in Huaminglou. He found empty granaries and starving neighbors; peasants told him the disaster was “three parts nature, seven parts man”. He returned convinced that the mess halls must close. A loyal deputy had become a critic.
