Annexation of Hyderabad (1947–48)

On the Indian independence map as “Hyderabad stands apart”

1947–48 — The Nizam ruled the largest princely state, with 16 million people, an army and a radio service of his own. He refused to join either dominion and hoped for a seat in the Commonwealth. The standoff lasted a year. In September 1948 Indian troops took Hyderabad in five days, and communal killings followed.
