On the WWI map as “Gallipoli”

25 Apr 1915-9 Jan 1916 — Allied troops, including Anzacs, hold beachheads beneath the Gallipoli ridgelines for eight months, but never capture the heights above them. About 56,000 Allied and 56,000 Ottoman soldiers die. For Australia and Turkey, these cliffs become a place from which both nations date themselves.
