Greenland ice cores (GISP2 and GRIP) (1989–93)

On the Norse and Aztecs map as “Summit — the ice cores”

1989–93 — At the highest point of Greenland’s ice sheet, the American GISP2 team drilled 3,053 metres down to bedrock. The European GRIP core, 28 kilometres away, reached 3,028 metres in 1992. Each year’s snow left a layer in the ice; the share of heavy oxygen in those layers offers a record of past temperatures.
