Henan famine (1942–43)
On the Chinese Revolution map as “The Henan famine”
1942–43 — Drought, the damage the flood had done to the province’s hydrology, requisition and blockade brought famine to Henan. Perhaps two million people died; estimates range from 1–3 million. Grain levies continued as people died, and in 1944 some Henan peasants disarmed retreating Nationalist troops. A government unable to feed its people was losing something no battlefield victory could restore. Remember Henan.
