On the Chinese Revolution map as “August Storm”
9 Aug 1945 — The Soviet Union entered the war and overran Manchukuo in eleven days. Japanese arsenals passed to Lin Biao’s arriving columns, whether through neglect or design. Soviet troops stripped the factories and returned home in 1946. Within a week, the decisive arena of the civil war was taking shape.
