1927 — The Nanchang rising

1 Aug 1927 — Communist-led regiments seize Nanchang for three days — the party’s first army of its own. Driven out and broken, the survivors under Zhu De trickle to the hills. The People’s Liberation Army still dates its founding to this morning.

1941 — The oil embargo reaches Tokyo

26 Jul–1 Aug 1941 — Washington answers the seizure of southern Indochina by freezing Japan’s assets and cutting off its oil. The fleet burns its reserves from this day; the clock to war now runs in months.

1 Aug 1975 — Thirty-five states ratify Europe’s postwar borders — Moscow’s prize — in exchange for “Basket III” human-rights pledges Moscow thinks are decoration. Dissidents will hold it to the letter.
