Senegal · Decolonization of Africa
Senegal, the oldest French foothold in Africa, became independent in 1960 as part of the Mali Federation with French Sudan. That union splintered within two months. Léopold Sédar Senghor, the poet and philosopher of Négritude, led Senegal for two decades and then, unusually, handed power on peacefully. Dakar’s close ties to France and its groundnut economy showed how colonial dependence could survive a change of flag.
