Palestine (West Bank and Gaza) · Refugee crises
In the 1948 war, about 700,000 to 750,000 Palestinians fled or were driven from their homes. Many went to neighboring states or to the Gaza Strip and West Bank, then controlled by Egypt and Jordan respectively. The UN created UNRWA for them in December 1949. Article 1D of the 1951 Convention addresses people receiving protection or assistance from another UN agency; its application depends on the circumstances of that assistance. A separate regime for Palestinian refugees still exists.
