What was Greenland before it was Greenland? The sections below follow this land through every era covered by the Maps of History atlases: who ruled it, what it was called, and when control changed. Each line links to the dated map. Modern borders serve as an approximation, as each atlas says on the map itself.

Greenland — the ice sheet and outer coasts · Norse and Aztecs

Most of Greenland lies beneath an ice sheet that rises to about 3,200 metres. Its layers preserve a climate record stretching back a hundred thousand years and more, and cores from Summit and Crête are among this atlas’s main sources. Conditions at the summit differ from those on the outer coast and in sheltered fjords. The outer coasts were too cold for Norse farming, though Inuit communities hunted along many of them.
