Grenada passed from French to British rule in 1763. In 1795–96 Julien Fédon, a planter of mixed descent, led enslaved and free people in a rising under the banner of the French Republic. They held most of the island for over a year before British troops crushed the revolt. Grenada became independent in 1974.
