Botswana · Decolonization of Africa

When the Bechuanaland Protectorate became Botswana in September 1966, its prospects seemed poor. It was landlocked, impoverished and almost surrounded by white-ruled states. Under Seretse Khama, however, it sustained a multiparty democracy and, after diamonds were found, developed one of the world’s fastest-growing economies. As a frontline state it also sheltered refugees. Botswana showed that a democratic exception was possible in this era.
