What was Brazil before it was Brazil? The sections below follow this land through every era covered by the Maps of History atlases: who ruled it, what it was called, and when control changed. Each line links to the dated map. Modern borders serve as an approximation, as each atlas says on the map itself.

Brazil (Portuguese to 1822) · Industrial Revolution

Brazil won independence in 1822, yet slavery lasted there until 1888. Enslaved Africans worked the coffee plantations of the Paraíba valley and São Paulo, supplying cafés and kitchens in industrial Europe and North America. After abolition, European immigrants replaced them. British capital built the railways that carried the coffee to port.

Brazil · Age of Revolutions

Brazil took a different path. The Portuguese court moved to Rio in 1808, making the colony the seat of a kingdom. A prince proclaimed an independent empire in 1822: the change was near-bloodless, monarchical and slaveholding. Slavery lasted until 1888, the last in the hemisphere. Stability came while two of the age’s great questions were deliberately left unasked: popular sovereignty and freedom for the enslaved.
