Great Tenmei famine (1782–88)
On the Meiji Japan and post-Soviet Russia map as “The Tenmei famine”
1782–1788 — Cold summers and the eruption of Mount Asama in 1783 ruined harvests, with the north-east suffering most. Across Japan, hundreds of thousands died from hunger and disease. Domains hoarded rice for their own people, while the shogunate had no national machinery for moving food to those starving elsewhere.
