Dōjima Rice Exchange (1730)
On the Meiji Japan and post-Soviet Russia map as “The Dōjima rice exchange”
1730 — The shogunate licensed the rice market at Osaka, where merchants traded receipts for rice that had yet to be delivered. This was an early form of futures trading. Samurai received their stipends in rice, so the price set here determined what those stipends could buy.
