14–19 Jun 1995 — Chechen fighters led by Shamil Basayev seized a hospital in this southern Russian town, holding more than 1,500 hostages. Two attempts to storm the building failed. Many people died during those attempts; the official count for the crisis was about 130, while other counts put it at about 165. The raiders left in exchange for peace talks.
