Stalin’s Soviet Union · TURNING POINT ·
Tsaritsyn renamed Stalingrad (1925)
On the Stalin’s Soviet Union map as “Stalingrad”
10 Apr 1925 — Tsaritsyn, on the Volga, became the first city named for Stalin. Its new name honored his inflated part in defending the city during the civil war. The battle fought there in 1942–43 turned the war, as The War Room shows. In 1961 the city became Volgograd.
