Marco Polo’s journey (1271)
On the Mongol Empire map as “The Polos sail”
1271 — From Acre, a Venetian merchant’s son sets out with his father and uncle. Their journey crosses the width of this map on roads kept safe by one empire. Marco Polo returns 24 years later; his book becomes a European window on the East and a map that Columbus annotates.
